Enjoy a Fun Winter Trip in Chichibu

                                                                                                                                                                           Jan.2019

Hello. I am Tarner from the Saitama Prefecture Tourism Division. This time I am reporting on things to do in Chichibu during the winter, such as strawberry picking and seeing icicles lit up. You can go on a day trip away from Tokyo to see icicles, seasonal strawberries, and Japanese winter sceneries that are best viewed at this time.

Strawberry Picking (Chichibu Fruit Farm)

If you take the express train from Ikebukuro, you will arrive at the station in 80 minutes. There is a place where you can walk to in 20 minutes and go strawberry picking. The access method is as follows.

(Leave the Seibu Chichibu Station)                            (Go straight down the road)

Get off at the Seibu Chichibu Station, go straight down the road, and turn right at the end. After that, just walk for about 20 minutes. Make sure to look out for this sign.

At the Chichibu Fruit Farm, you can eat several different kinds of strawberries for 30 minutes depending on the time of year. Their strawberries are also very big, so you can feel total bliss if you are a strawberry lover. Enjoy their sweet and juicy strawberries.

Foreigners can also enjoy strawberry picking since there are multilingual instructions on how to pick the strawberries inside the garden.

After enjoying strawberry picking you can go see some icicles. There are three icicle places in Chichibu, but the place with the best access by train are the Ashigakubo Icicles. If you would like to read articles about the other icicles, please use the following links.

Ashigakubo Icicles

The Ashigakubo Icicles began in 2014 as a sightseeing spot that takes advantage of Chichibu’s cold winters. The site is very cold, so please be sure to wear the appropriate clothing.

The nearest station is the Ashigakubo Station on the Seibu Chichibu Line. It is an 8 minute train ride from the Seibu Chichibu Station. After leaving the ticket gate, go down the slope to the left and you will reach the place where you can see the icicles in about 10 minutes.

The icicles are lit up from sunset on weekends (it depends on the day, but it is generally around 5pm) until 8pm, and it creates a fantastic scenery. There are icicles along the boardwalk, and even if you stop to take pictures, you can see the whole place in about an hour. There is also a spot where you can take a picture of the icicles together with a train, so if you are lucky you can capture them at the same time. I highly recommend this place to families and couples.
