Konosu Bikkuri Hina Matsuri

Have you heard of the “Hina Matsuri”, a traditional Japanese event?

The hina matsuri is one of Japan’s annual events that pray for the healthy growth of girls.

A characteristic of this festival are the hinaningyo, which are pairs of male and female dolls.

Noblemen from a thousand years ago displayed these dolls for blessing marriages, and to pray that their own children’s marriages were happy.

Konosu City in Saitama Prefecture is a popular doll making area, and is said to have over a 380 year history.

Since they have a long history in making dolls, every year from February to the beginning of March, Konosu City holds an event called the Bikkuri Hina Matsuri (Surprising Doll Festival), that has on display the largest pyramid tiered doll stand in all of Japan.

The dolls are decorated, one by one, with beautifully made ornaments and are stacked impressively on the tiered doll stand. Since this is displayed at the mall connected to the train station, it is very easy to access.

Other than this pyramid type, various other hinaningyo are on display at the mall.

Everyone should come and visit Konosu to see these beautiful dolls.
