Kawagoe’s oldest warehouse structure:

the residence of the Osawake family

Edo culture is strongly reflected in the details and designs of the architecture of Kawagoe,

and many buildings are both beautiful and practical.
The Osawake family residence is an important cultural property standing on Ichibanmachi, and is the oldest building in Kawagoe.
It was built by a dry-goods merchant in 1792. It has a simple design, but has ingenuity and is quite fire resistant.
It was one of the buildings that escaped the last large fire, and a prosperous Kawagoe merchant took this chance to build a warehouse.
They currently sell Kawagoe folk crafts and souvenirs on the first floor, and the second floor displays paintings of Kawagoe private houses.
The box staircase leading to the second floor and the staircase walls are worth seeing.
They handle a lot of souvenirs that you can only get in Kawagoe, so please come and visit.
