A teamLab Art Project: Digitized Lakeside and Forest

~ Enjoy otherworldly, magical illuminations at Metsä Village ~

  Dec. 2018

From December 1, 2018 to March 1, 2019 the teamLab art project exhibition, Digitized Lakeside and Forest, will be open for visitors to enjoy at Metsä Village in Hanno City, Saitama Prefecture.

teamLab is an art collective, interdisciplinary group of ultra-technologists whose collaborative practice seeks to navigate the confluence of science, technology, design, and art to create works through “experimentation and innovation." Through a range of projects and exhibitions teamLab has received critical acclaim both in Japan and abroad. Sections of Metsä Village opened early in November this year and the Moomin Valley Park area is set to open for business on March 16, 2019.

The Digitized Lakeside and Forest art project will transform the Metsä Village Miyazawa Lake and surrounding forest into a digital art space that changes in reaction to the presence of people. When touched or blown by the wind, the ovoid art pieces react with a radiant display of vibrant color that transfers to the surrounding ovoids as well as a color-specific sound. The change in color also spreads to the rest of the lake and forest, transforming nature into a living art form.

The Digitized Lakeside and Forest is divided into three unique areas: the Resisting and Resonating Ovoids and Forest, the Autonomous Resonating Life on the Lake Surface, and the Floating, Resonating Spheres.

In the Floating, Resonating Spheres area, ovoids float and move on their own like balloons which can be freely touched and interacted with by visitors. Touching one ovoid causes it to change color and emit a sound specific to object's color which gradually spreads to the other ovoids in the area.

In the Autonomous Resonating Life on the Lake Surface area, visitors can touch the ovoids surrounding the lake to cause a chain reaction to spread across the water surface. The surreal experience creates the sensation that the forest and lake themselves are responding to your voice and actions.

The Resisting and Resonating Ovoids and Forest area is absolutely filled with ovoids, creating the feeling of getting lost in a wondrous maze of color and sound.

Additionally, the forest and lake are illuminated in a brilliant display of alternating colors; from vibrant pinks which evoke thoughts of beautiful sakura blossoms to rich orange tones which produce the image of vividly-striking fall foliage. You'll never tire of gazing at the stunning reflection of the forest and ovoids on the lake's surface as they create a surreal, beautiful spectacle that's breathtaking to behold.

Wandering leisurely around the entire village while enjoying the range of experiences will take approximately an hour. Afterwards, visitors can warm up with the range of hot soups and beverages available at Metsä Village while they sit, relax, and enjoy a visual feast.

It's advised that visitors come dressed in suitable, warm clothing, as snow is not uncommon on colder winter days in Hanno City. Also, as you will be walking through the forest while it is quite dark, we recommend wearing appropriate footwear that's easy to walk in.
